THEME:
Thriving in the face of digital disruption

The construction industry in Africa is ripe for disruption and digital transformation is no longer a choice, but a necessity. For many Southern African countries, the future is already here – as is the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) – but the time to prepare for the future has passed. It is now imperative that those in the built sector can access information and knowledge – when and where they want to.

The region’s construction industry relies heavily on manual labour, mechanical technology and established operating and business models. However, digital technologies have gradually changed how infrastructure and other built assets are designed, constructed, operated and maintained.  Even so, Africa is not alone in its quest to understand the impact of 4IR and the context of which differs from country to country. What is of greater importance, though is to find out what Africa has accomplished to create a solid foundation on which 4IR can flourish.

The Ministerial and VIP Keynote on 9 June 2020 and the following day’s Stakeholder Engagement Forum on 10 June 2020 will bring together some of the SADC region’s brightest minds to address how the built environment will thrive in the 4IR, based on the progress thus far. These imperative discussions will not only support job creation in the sector, but highlight how today’s projects should be planned, designed, operated and decommissioned.
